Optional Classes and Routines
This year, routines are optional and don’t correspond directly to a single track. You may choose to join the routine that matches your track level (Adv/Master: Owls/Badgers, Int+: Foxes/Hedgehogs, Int: Eagles) or use the free time for rest, other optional classes, or any of our camp activities
Themes/Tracks: These are series of classes on a related topic- except for the solo jazz routine, they are not cumulative and you can attend some of a series without attending all of it.
Balboa optionals-: In addition to our full track! Come get Balboa is known for it's fancy footwork, nuanced movement, and fast tempos. With the exception of the beginner class, all classes will be at an intermediate level and assume you know the basics.
Nia- Alcina: Join Alcina for a morning mind-body-spirit wellness program. Bring a yoga mat if desired.
Individual Classes:
Swing Rueda - Dom and Khiem- Adapted from the Salsa Rueda, Swing Rueda is Lindy Hop in the round! A caller will shout moves in which everyone will do the move in unison (with their partner) while maintaining the integrity of the circle.
It’s All Swing - Jenn and Matt : Incorporating other dances as inspiration in your swing dancing (can be lindy or Balboa)
Hijack? Jenn and Matt - Rethinking leading vs following
Historical Figures: Cab Calloway - (Alyssa) - Not only was Cab Calloway a consummate singer, performer, and bandleader, he was also an excellent dancer! Come learn a short sequence featuring some of his signature movement!
Historical Figures: Josephine Baker - (Alyssa) - Josephine Baker was an incomparable performer who spread her unique form of The Charleston internationally. This class will have an improv focus, based on Josephine Baker's distinctive stylings
Top Down! - Ana Lisa and Rafal: We'll explore a range of upper body variations and challenge ourselves to let the bottom half hold steady while the top half does the talking and challenge ourselves on how we use them and express them while dancing with our partner and solo.

Cardio Charleston- Mike Thibault: sweat it out with the camp director in a fun and energetic workout to start out your day!
Solo Jazz Routines- Alyssa or Tyedric: Our daily solo jazz classes will be progressive this year, combining into a routine to be performed at the end of camp. Classes will be taught at an advanced (Alyssa) and intermediate (Tyedric) level- expect to be challenged with solo jazz awesomeness.
Karaoke: The Art of Acting A Fool - Dom & Khiem - In this class we will explore certain subtleties of karaoke so that you can stop being a scared little redacted and go up there and sing the damn song.
Teaching From Perspective - Andrea: This class will help you assess your own skills as a dance teacher and help you find more effective ways to teach.
Urban Line Dancing- Dom & Kheim: Add some moves to your repertoire as we enter the club and learn some classic urban line dances!
Collaborative Dancing- Alcina & Dan: A partnered dance is a shared experience that’s shaped by what you each bring. This class will help you develop awareness and techniques to connect and dance with any person.
Jams & Steals- Anthony, Irina, and Laura: Worried about how to enter a jam? Never able to steal your friend on their birthday? These three will have you swapping and stealing in no time.
Dancing to Soul Music - Laura - Get down with that Motown sound, and discover some different types of movement your body can use. When the spirit moves you, let
Movement Quality- Erin: This class uses improvisation tools from modern and postmodern pedagogy to expand the range and dynamics of what is possible in improv for jazz dancers.
Butts for Swing Dancers - Laurel - This topic has become Laurel's specialty. Bring your butt on down and join in.
